Our U3A has over 200 members. Most of our activities take place in groups, ranging in size from 2 to 50 or more for such groups as Walking and Theatre.
There are a number of social events which attract members generally, rather than being limited to a particular interest group. These include a coffee morning, lunch out, a 4-night holiday away from Bakewell and talks by visiting speakers (Meg Laird talks listed on the "events" page accessed by the button above) so it is not necessary to join a specific interest group, in order to benefit from the companionship and have an event to attend. It is not necessary to join, in order to attend the Meg Laird talks or the coffee morning.
We have about 20 groups covering a wide range of topics. All are organised by volunteers. (For those not already familiar with the U3A, the coordinator of a group is not necessarily a subject expert, but is someone who is prepared to do a minimal amount of organisation). All groups welcome all members, unless there is some constraint which limits the number. Our interest groups include walking with walks of different distances arranged on different days, bowls, birding, art, writing, theatre, gardens & houses with excursions arranged by the group, scrabble, book reading, languages, philosophy, bridge, photography, craft, cooking.
Non-members will be welcomed to join in the activity of a group as a taster.
We issue a quarterly newsletter of about 40 pages, which can be viewed via the “Gazette” button above.
